Road Trip Hacks

When traveling, you can find as much joy in the journey as the destination. All it takes is a little planning. If you are taking a road trip, the following hacks could make the travel smoother while creating some amusement and fond memories.

Basics

“Sometimes the obvious can be overlooked when packing up a family,” says Dustyn Shroff, Vice President of GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s largest independent auto insurance agency. “Make sure to bring along emergency gear and the appropriate documentation including, your license, registration and proof of car insurance.”

Navigation

  • Interstates and highways that are odd numbers run, north-south. Those with even numbers run east-west.
  • Go old school with a map. Kids can follow your route and it could prevent hearing the dread question, “Are we there yet?”
  • If you are using your phone as your GPS and do not have a holder, binder clips and rubber bands attached to air vents can help keep it in place.
  • Take a screenshot of your directions from your phone while you still have a Wi-Fi connection.Road-Trip-Snacks2-copy

Entertainment

  • Play games as a team instead of competing against one another. This will prevent fighting during the license plate game or road scavenger hunts.
  • If you are bringing along your pooch, invest in a Kong toy. You can fill it with peanut butter. Dogs get bored too and this will provide entertainment without making a mess.
  • Download podcasts and audio-books. CD’s will be necessary to save your phone battery.
  • You can find travel game print-outs for kids at About Family Vacations
  • Use a pencil case or sunglasses case to store your cables, one spot and tangle free.
  • Bring a multi-port USB car charger

Restless/Sluggish

  • Make a stop where everyone can burn off energy, pack along a Frisbee or ball.
  • If you begin feeling tired, pull over to stretch, do jumping jacks or walk around
  • Get caffeine.

“Driving drowsy is just as treacherous as driving drunk,” reminds Buck with GreatFlorida Insurance, Florida’s largest independent auto insurance provider.

Clean & Organized

  • Store change for tolls in old plastic candy or gum containers. Remember to always have cash and some small bills on hand, for tolls.
  • A tackle box or craft container can help you portion out snacks and keep from overeating while saving some money by purchasing your own food.
  • A plastic cereal container makes a perfect no-spill trash can.

The American Automobile Association AAA, estimates this will be the second busiest Memorial Day weekend on record for road travelers. 38 million Americans are expected to hit the road. Lower gas prices, rising personal income and a strong labor market are believed to be the motivators for a greater number of travelers this year.
